REDBONES GOES WHOLE HOG
THIRD ANNUAL PIG PICKIN' IS FUND RAISER FOR
THE SOMERVILLE HOMELESS COALITION

Davis Square, Somerville, MA - Pig out for a cause at Redbones Pig Pickin' on Monday, August 9, from 6 - 9 PM. Proceeds go to the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC). The meal includes slow-roasted, smoked pig with all the fixings and a beverage for $ 20.00 per person. Reservations are requested; call 617.628.2200.

Redbones August fund raiser is a Southern style Pig Pickin'. In keeping with tradition, the rib joint is firing up its portable smoker in front of the restaurant, slow roasting a whole hog, and encouraging folks to stop and say, "hey" to the pit master. The smoking and basting goes on all day; the pickin' begins at 6 PM. In addition to pork pulled of the bone, the meal includes slaw, macaroni salad, corn on the cob, chips, corn bread, watermelon and a cold drink - your choice of Dr. Pepper, Big Red, lemonade, iced tea or beer.

No Pig Pickin' would be complete without music. This year the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band (the SAPS ) will play their brand of upbeat, up tempo tunes like "Down by the Riverside" and "Sunny Side of the Street." Made up of a core group of 10 - 15 self-described regular Joes with day jobs, the band aims to please if the cause is true and the time is right.

Pig Pickin's, at the heart of North Carolina culinary culture, are frequently held as community fund raisers. Redbones is adopting the tradition for the SHC. "We depend on donations from the community to keep our programs going," says Mark Allen-Follensbee, SHC Director, who adds "Redbones consistently helps the SHC, and other city agencies, and is a wonderful example of how a local business can support an organization like ours." Last year, the Pig Pickin' raised $3,000 dollars for the SHC.

About the Somerville Homeless Coalition
In 1985, a group of neighbors, church leaders, and city officials came together to respond to the surge in homelessness in the City of Somerville. This community response resulted in the opening of Somerville's first and only shelter for homeless adult men and women and the formation of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. Today, in addition to our adult shelter, we operate a family shelter, food pantry, community suppers, a case management program, and 3 new permanent housing initiatives.
