REDBONES GOES WHOLE HOG
with BARBECUE & BENEFIT for
SOMERVILLE HOMELESS COALITION
Somerville, MA -- For 20 years, real pit barbecue has been Redbones trademark and giving back to the community part of its mission. The popular Davis Square barbecue spot blends the two in August at the 6th Annual Pig Pickin’ and Fund Raiser for the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC). The popular summer event takes place on Chester Street in front of the restaurant on Monday, August 6 from 6 - 9 PM. The rain date is Monday, August 13. The meal includes slow smoked pork pulled off the bone with all the fixin’s for $20.00 per person. For additional information call 617.628.2200.
"After 20 years of barbecue under our belt, we remain committed to serving authentic Southern food - especially the whole hogs, loins, butts and bellies cooked in our smokers at events like the August Pig Pickin'," says Redbones co-owner Robert Gregory. Traditional Pig Pickin's take place outside where the smoking lasts for hours and cooking over low heat using specially selected wood adds flavor to the meat. During the cooking folks gather for the communal event which is often a fund raiser like Redbones Pig Pickin' for the SHC. In addition to the 'cue and fixin's there will be accompaniments including slaw, corn on the cob, greens, corn bread and watermelon and a choice of beer, lemonade or iced tea.
The cooking is more smoke than fire - the event really heats up when the music starts. Among the bands performing are the SAPS - Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band - a brass band of local musicians playing the up beat, up tempo tunes of New Orleans familiar at Crescent City events. Also on hand to entertain, the Beau Roland Band, The Family Jewels and The Spring Hill Rounders.
About the Somerville Homeless Coalition
In 1985, a group of neighbors, church leaders, and city officials came together to respond to the surge in homelessness in the City of Somerville. This community response resulted in the opening of Somerville's first and only shelter for homeless adult men and women and the formation of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. Today, in addition to an adult shelter, the SHC operates a family shelter, food pantry, community suppers, a case management program, and 3 new permanent housing initiatives. Redbones, at 55 Chester Street, Davis Square, Somerville, is open for lunch, dinner, late night dining and Sunday brunch. Delivery, take out and catering are also available. For information call 617.628.2200.
