MEETS KENTUCKY DERBY TRADITION
Davis Square, Somerville, MA -- Davis Square, Somerville, MA -- Showing its Southern roots, Redbones goes the distance to honor the Kentucky Derby on May 5 with a food and drink trifecta. Burgoo, barbecued mutton and mint juleps, all traditionally served at the Derby, will be available a la carte at Redbones for three days, May 4 - 6.
"For Derby weekend, we're getting mutton from the Moonlite Bar-B-Q in Owensburg, Kentucky, undoubtedly the best source for barbecue, mutton and burgoo in the country," says Redbones owner/pitmaster Robert Gregory. Moonlite mutton is cooked on a pit for close to 16 hours, then mixed with a vinegar sauce and offered sliced or chopped at the restaurant's buffet or via mail order.
A second Kentucky favorite, Burgoo, will also be served during Derby weekend. Burgoo, a slow cooking, meat-based stew with potatoes, onions, corn and seasonings, is a classic Kentucky Derby dish typically served with saltines, as it will be at Redbones. For a true Southern taste, Redbones is using the Moonlite Bar-B-Q's burgoo recipe.
For many, Mint Juleps are the winning tradition at Churchill Downs and Redbones bar tenders will mix up their signature version for three days in May, the 4th - 6th.
"As we celebrate our 20th year, Redbones is all about tradition," says Gregory. From the real pit barbecue served daily to bringing Moonlite mutton from Owensburg for the Derby, Redbones continues to build on its tradition and consistently pleases existing patrons and wins over new ones.
