REDBONES GOES HOG WILD
5TH ANNUAL PIG PICKIN' BENEFITS
SOMERVILLE HOMELESS COALITION

Davis Square, Somerville, MA -- A Southern tradition moves North with Redbones eagerly anticipated annual Pig Pickin' and fund raiser for the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC). The event on Monday, August 7, takes place on Chester Street in front of the restaurant from 6 - 9 PM. The meal includes slow smoked pork pulled off the bone with all the fixin's for $20.00 per person. Reservations are requested, but not necessary, and may be made by calling 617.628.2200. The rain date is Monday, August 14.

"The barbecue is unequaled, the cause important, and it's a great party," says Redbones Manager and event organizer Chris Bol adding, "many people have never been to a pig roast and it's awesome for them to see pigs coming out of a smoker for the first time." For the August event a pit master from Redbones will fire up the custom made, portable 'pig rig' Sunday night and slow smoke a couple of hogs 'til they're ready for pickin' hours later. In addition to the whole hogs, there'll be loins, butts, and bellies plus accompaniments including slaw, corn on the cob, greens, corn bread and watermelon and a choice of beer, lemonade or iced tea.

In the South, Pig Pickin's are often associated with church gatherings and political rallies. Four years ago Redbones chose to make its annual Pig Pickin' a fund raiser for the Somerville Homeless Coalition - which is consistent with Redbones commitment to supporting community organizations and a practice for which restaurant owners Robert Gregory and Caryn Whitney were recently honored. On June 19, State Representative Denise Provost issued citations congratulating Gregory and Whitney for their contributions to the City and '... being good corporate citizens of the City of Somerville and pioneering the renaissance of Davis Square.'

Mike Libby, Director of Development and Programs at the SHC, concurs with the citation and praises Redbones generosity. Of the Pig Pickin' Libby says, "we are very excited about the Pig Pickin'. It's very important to the SHC to have community businesses like Redbones partner with us to help raise money so that we can create more affordable housing for individuals and families."

About the Somerville Homeless Coalition
In 1985, a group of neighbors, church leaders, and city officials came together to respond to the surge in homelessness in the City of Somerville. This community response resulted in the opening of Somerville's first and only shelter for homeless adult men and women and the formation of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. Today, in addition to an adult shelter, the SHC operates a family shelter, food pantry, community suppers, a case management program, and 3 new permanent housing initiatives.
